FluidDA

FluidDA is an imaging CRO providing advanced image processing based on proprietary technology. The technology combines biomedical images such as CT or MRI with advanced engineering methods.

FluidDA’s is mainly active in the respiratory field with activities in the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular domain as well. FluidDA’s customers range from large pharmaceutical companies to small-scale start-ups.

FluidDA was founded as a spin off company from the University of Antwerp late 2005 and consists of a qualified team of professionals with several years of experience in the field of medicine and engineering.

Reducing cost and development time using functional imaging

In recent studies we have demonstrated that the use of imaging modalities such as CT and MRI in combination with advanced engineering tools provides very sensitive outcome parameters. This has, for instance, been demonstrated when assessing the mode of action of bronchodilators in asthmatic and COPD patients. The use of more sensitive outcome parameters in pre-clinical and early clinical phases has the large potential to be cost efficient through its predictive capabilities and by identifying ‘early failures’. Significant effort has been invested in validating the modeling approach and optimizing the patient specific image analysis.

FluidDA’s services

A brief description of the services provided by FluidDA:

  • Image analysis (CT, MRI, PET, SPECT)
  • CFD/FEA analysis in patient specific, animal and generic models
  • Phenotyping of respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD, CF, ARDS, ALI)
  • Personalized deposition modeling in pre-clinical and early clinical phases
  • Application of functional imaging in early clinical trials (phase I/II)
  • Device design and optimization
  • Analysis and design of treatments for obstructive sleep apnea (OSAHS)

Biological Fluid Dynamics – Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

The dynamics of fluids flowing through a human body can have a significant effect on the overall health of a person. Unobstructed flow in the respiratory system ensures the delivery of enough oxygen to the blood. Various pulmonary diseases like asthma or COPD may affect this process. The same principles hold for all body fluids like for instance blood. Obstructions or alterations of blood flows can lead to heart attack, aneurysms, etc.

The behaviour of fluids can be described through mathematical equations called Navier-Stokes equations. If the patient's geometry (his lungs, arteries, heart, etc) and the so-called boundary conditions (blood flow velocity, airflow pressures, etc) can also be prescribed accurately then a patient specific model can be constructed that allows for highly detailed, functional imaging. The functional imaging…

Structural Dynamics – Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Often it can be observed in the human body that the fluid flows influence the structural behaviour of the surrounding tissue and vice versa. Consider an aortic valve being opened by a flow of blood or an upper airway collapsing during sleep apnea thereby obstructing the flow. These phenomena can be described as Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI).

Besides these Fluid-Structure Interactions, the human bone structure also experiences loading caused by other factors like implants, orthopedic or cranio-maxillofacial surgery, etc. Similar to the flow equations, mathematical equations also exist to describe the behaviour of a structure following a load. This load can be, as explained, blood pushing against the structure, but it can…

Imaging CRO

FluidDA has an international network of clinical centers that are well equipped to perform the imaging trials. FluidDA employs highly skilled people that are able to write study protocols according to GCP guidelines, organize and monitor imaging studies, liaise with technical experts for adequate image processing and report comprehensively to the client.

Medical Devices and Other Facilities

Medical devices as well as surgical aids can be optimised using CFD and FEA techniques. A better understanding of flow and structural properties results in a better design for the medical devices.

The techniques are also suited to predict the outcome of certain therapies.
