Using SynBiosys, well-known building-blocks are applied in a completely new multi-block polymeric architecture that offers endless possibilities for fine tuning of properties. Every ‘block’ is pre-made to fit a desired composition, after which the blocks are combined into one polymer. As such, SynBiosys ensures optimal flexibility as well as control over the physico-chemical and degradation characteristics. All in all, SynBiosys allows the design of tailor-made polymeric drug delivery systems that can accommodate a wide range of release profiles for a large spectrum of small and medium-sized therapeutic compounds.
SynBiosys polymers are compatible with state of the art depot formulation technologies (micro spheres, micro rods, microparticles etc.) for controlled release of biologically active compounds. Because the characteristics of SynBiosys polymers can be tuned to fit specific requirements, the platform has also proven to be successful as drug eluting medical device coating. An example is the use of SynBiosys-based coatings for drug eluting stents; nowadays widely used in the treatment of coronary artery diseases. These medical implants address the need for reducing the occurrence of re-narrowing coronary arteries (restenoses) after angioplasty and promoting vessel healing by well controlled release of a specific drug from a thin coating. SynBiosys coatings are particularly suited for such applications as they allow tight control over the elution kinetics and degrade completely afterwards. The result is a clean, bare metal stent without residues of either the coating or the drugs.
