Teva Launches Gianvi Contraceptive Tablets

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, an Israel-based company that develops, manufactures and markets generic and innovative pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, has launched Gianvi (Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol) tablets, generic version of Bayer's Yaz tablets.

YAZ is a progesterone and estrogen combination birth control pill. Yaz is used for preventing pregnancy.

Teva Pharma has claimed that, as the first company to file an ANDA containing a paragraph IV certification for this product, it has been awarded a 180-day period of marketing exclusivity.

In 2008, Teva’s subsidiary Barr Pharmaceuticals had entered into a supply and licensing agreement with Bayer. Under this agreement, Teva has the right to launch an authorized generic version of Yaz on July 1, 2011, or earlier in certain circumstances.
