Evaluation of Bone Implants Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

CASE STUDIES
By Animascope

The client is a company focusing on medical devices. The client is
developing new material for bone trauma surgery and arthroplasty,
whose implants are required to be tested for their fit and biocompatibility.

The client company provided large animals (sheep)
already implanted with several cylindrical inserts (5mm diameter)
in the bones of the knee. Animascope utilised non-invasive in vivo
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the integration of implants.

The dimension, the shape and the status of the surgical
cavity were evaluated and quantitated in any spatial orientation,
with attention to the density and the thickness of the trabecular
and cortical tissues surrounding the implanted material. Also the
fit and the sealing between the implant and the bone were evaluated.
The majority of the sites showed good fit and integration of
the implant, both in cortical and trabecular bone. Nevertheless, in
some sites Animascope found extended lesions of the bone tissues
and presence of debris. In one site without implant, some material
was found, probably cells colonising the cavity. A full report was
delivered to the client, including description of procedures, results,
pictures, metrics and discussion of the results.
