US beefs up efforts to fight Ebola

The US Government is planning to deploy 3,000 military forces and sponsor more than $500m as part of efforts to bolster support in response to a global battle against the deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

America will also set up additional field hospitals, deliver more health-care personnel and training health workers in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, which are among the nations that are highly hit with the deadly virus.

US President Barack Obama counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco was quoted by the Wall Street Journal sa saying: "There’s a lot that we’ve been putting toward this, but it is not sufficient.

"So the president has directed a more scaled-up response and that’s what you’re going to hear more about on Tuesday."

Obama’s strategy also involves bolstering the capacity of local officials and boost support from international organisations including the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.

Further, the Pentagon will send 130,000 personal protective equipment sets; thousands of testing kits such as disinfectants and protective equipment to communities hit with the outbreak

In addition, two more mobile lab units; and a 25-bed mobile hospital will also be sent to take care of those sickened with the virus.

"The military has unique capabilities in terms of logistical capacities, in terms of manpower, in terms of operating in austere environments," Monaco added.

Obama is also anticipated to ask for commitments of funds, material and health workers during meetings with world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York the following week.
