Malvern Instruments - Particle Size and Particle Shape Analysis, Zeta Potential, NIR-Chemical Imaging, Rheology and SEC

Malvern Instruments is a market leader in measuring performance controlling material properties.

These include particle size, particle shape, zeta potential, molecular weight, size and conformation, rheological properties and chemical distribution. Malvern delivers the systems, support and expertise that ensure the analytical integrity and productivity needed to drive research, development and manufacturing.

Malvern's measurement solutions for scientists, technologists and engineers advance continually through customer collaboration. Complementary materials' characterisation systems deliver inter-related measurements that reflect the complexities of particulates and disperse systems, nanomaterials and macromolecules.

Combining intelligently implemented technologies with in-depth industry applications, knowledge and support contribute significantly to the development of effective medicines and efficient manufacturing processes.

Laboratory pharmaceutical solutions: Particle size measurement – control bioavailability

Size measurements provide an important in vitro indicator of the bioavailability of a given formulation, allowing formulators to predict the dynamics of drug release for both traditional dosage forms, such as tablets or suspensions, and novel systems based around aerosol, transdermal or other delivery modes.

Stability testing and stability prediction

The stability of a given formulation can also be predicted, either through controlling the particle size or through understanding the interactions that occur between particles in suspension either via rheological or zeta-potential measurements.

Rheological properties to understand process performance

Measuring the rheological properties of the bulk sample allows simulation of how the material will perform in the process or under its "end use" conditions.

Dynamic image analysis for better, faster differentiation

The addition of image analysis systems makes it possible to assess the impact of both the particle size and particle shape of pharmaceutical intermediates or excipients on the product form and on its bioavailability.

Rapid particle shape characterisation provides more data that helps in understanding the reasons for deviations from manufacturing specifications, and enables the development of more robust production processes.

NIR chemical imaging - to see chemical maps and find counterfeit products

Non-destructive determination of the distribution and concentrations of pharmaceutical tablet components and the assessment of pharmaceutical blend homogeneity. Capable of simultaneously analysing a number of tablets or capsules, NIR imaging can be automated to provide rapid "genuine/fake" detection.

Therapeutic protein and antibody characterisation

Gel permeation chromatography / size exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC) is the technique of choice for rapid and reliable characterisation of molecular weight and molecular structure for all types of macromolecules – proteins, natural polymers and synthetic polymers.

Dynamic light scattering offers additional information about your protein sample. This non-invasive protein characterisation technique is fast, accurate, simple to perform, and you can recover the sample! Coupling of light scattering to SEC allows for the identification of unknown components and trace aggregate detection.

On-line pharmaceutical solutions

Malvern Instruments' on-line particle characterisation systems provide manufacturers with the ability to follow pharmaceutical milling, classification, spray drying and granulation processes, yielding closed loop process control and improved production efficiency and product quality.

Process analytical technology (PAT)

Malvern Instruments systems deliver industrially relevant information on particle characterisation, rheological properties; chemical composition and spatial distribution that can help you comply with the US FDA's process analytical technology (PAT) initiative, to make your manufacturing processes more efficient and predictable.
