CAMAG - Thin-Layer Chromatography

CAMAG are the Swiss experts on instrumental thin-layer chromatography (TLC).

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) resp. high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) is a separation technique accepted by regulatory agencies and recommended by analysts as an extremely flexible, reliable and cost-effective method. It is successfully used in:

  • Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Industrial applications
  • Food analysis / animal feed
  • Clinical applications
  • Herbals, dietary supplements
  • Cosmetics
  • Forensics
  • Environment

CAMAG, founded in 1958 in Muttenz, Switzerland, concentrates on the development of instruments and automated solutions for HPTLC/TLC which is a well-established analytical technique used in today's laboratories. The Swiss company markets its products out of Switzerland (Headquarters), in Germany and the US through their subsidiaries. In more than 70 other countries CAMAG is represented by well selected and established companies. CAMAG distributors regularly send their product specialists and technical staff for education and training to the headquarters in Muttenz. Furthermore CAMAG organises training courses overseas, for example, in the Far East and US. The task of CAMAG product specialists is to advise customers in system selection and application competence and in the operation of CAMAG systems.

TLC and HPTLC

Today extensive standardisation, ensuring improved reproducibility of TLC/HPTLC is CAMAG's focus. Within the chromatography marketplace HPLC became much more widely used, although it has become clear that the two methods HPLC and HPTLC complement each other very well.

CAMAG develops, manufactures and markets sophisticated instruments and products as well as software for all steps of modern thin-layer chromatography / HPTLC:

  • Sample application
  • Chromatogram development
  • Derivatisation
  • Densitometric evaluation
  • UV detection
  • Documentation

Latest product developments:

  • The TLC-MS Interface for rapid elution of separated zones directly from a TLC or HPTLC plate into MS for identification
  • The Automatic Development Chamber ADC 2 offering convenience and reproducibility for isocratic developments of TLC/HPTLC plates and foils
  • The digital documentation system TLC Visualiser (the successor of DigiStore2) with a very fast, high resolution 12bit CCD camera

Planar chromatography

CAMAG's solutions for planar chromatography are used in the following areas:

  • Pharmaceutical industry: quality control, content uniformity tests, assay, evaluation of related compounds (sub-component evaluation), stability testing, etc
  • Industrial applications: process development and optimisation, in-process control, cleaning validation, etc
  • Forensic: detection of document falsifications, poisoning investigations, dye stuff analysis, etc
  • Environmental analysis: water, soil, residue analysis, etc
  • Food analysis/animal feed: quality control, stability testing, drug residues, additives, pesticides, nutritious materials, vitamins, etc
  • Clinical applications: lipids, metabolism studies, drug screening, doping control, etc
  • Herbals / natural products: identification, stability tests detections of adulteration, assay of marker compounds, etc
