French pharmaceutical firm Sanofi will work with Google’s life sciences team to collect, analyze and understand information impacting diabetes.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, diabetes is anticipated to affect 592 million people globally by 2035.

Sanofi and Google intend to use data and miniaturized technology for offering additional tools to enable patients to self-manage their disease, and provide healthcare professionals with the ability to better support and treat them.

The collaboration is expected to make it easier for patients to manage their diabetes, whilst reducing costs and the risk of complications.

The new tools to be developed by both the firms will bring together several of the earlier siloed pieces of diabetes management and allow new kinds of interventions.

Sanofi CEO Olivier Brandicourt said: "This initiative combines Sanofi’s strength and knowledge in diabetes with Google’s leadership in technology and analytics to create a first-of-its-kind initiative with the potential to transform diabetes care."

Google CEO of the life sciences team Andy Conrad said: "With new technologies emerging to provide a more continuous and real-time view of a patient’s health, we can see the promise for more proactive and effective ways to control diabetes.

"Together with Sanofi, we believe diabetes management can be simpler and more convenient, which may help patients achieve an improved quality of life."

Last year, Google agreed to work with Novartis for the development of contact lenses to measure glucose in tears of diabetic patients.
