HRT market: innovative treatment options to restore growth

The once diminishing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal symptoms market is forecast to grow from $1.6 billion in 2007 to $2.8 billion in 2017, reflecting a growth in volume sales from 1.9 billion to two billion. Short-term strategies that tried to facilitate recovery from the damning findings of the Women's Heath Initiative (WHI) study, which linked HRT to cancer and cardiovascular safety risks, will give way to more dynamic changes; development of innovative treatment options and a growing number of women who want pharmaceutical intervention for their menopausal symptoms will maintain market growth.

Opioid market: reformulations and short-acting opioids continue to drive growth
The opioid market is currently valued at $7.5 billion and is set to increase at a CAGR of 2.4% to reach over $10 billion by 2017. The development of novel anti-abuse reformulations of the market leading drugs (oxycodone and morphine) and the establishment of short-acting opioids (e.g. Fentora and other fentanyl products) are set to become major growth drivers. Short-acting opioids represent good in-licensing opportunities for companies with large sales and marketing resources, while there is currently no anti-abuse product on the market.

Diabetes market: a rising patient population
By 2017, the prevalence of diabetes in the seven major markets (the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) is expected to rise to 56.38 million. The drivers for growth in the patient population include the ageing demographic profile and the explosion in rates of obesity, which is a key risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Despite the presence of several, well-established classes of oral antidiabetic, there remains an unmet need for safer, more efficacious agents with the ability to halt, or reverse, long-term disease progression. Novel classes of incretin mimetics have the potential to improve time to secondary failure, although proving long-term safety will be an important factor for these drugs.

Huntington's disease market: opportunities for the right drug
Predictions for the future of the Huntington's disease (HD) market vary widely, depending on whether the right drug can be found. With a strong genetic link and a freely available reliable genetic diagnostic test, prophylactic treatment with a disease-modifying drug could dramatically expand the treatable patient population. Datamonitor estimates that by incorporating pre-symptomatic patients into the patient pool, and with the launch of a theoretical disease-modifying therapy, the potential value of the HD market could exceed $3 billion per annum. However, based on the current drug pipeline and patient population, the HD market is forecast to be worth $202 million by 2016.

Solid tumor market: potential lies in targeted therapies
More than three million new cases of solid tumors are forecast to be diagnosed across the seven major pharmaceutical markets in 2007, obviously representing an enormous market potential. However, if the Phase I pipeline is examined, there are more than twice as many targeted therapies as cytotoxics in development. This is because as understanding of the molecular basis for cancer continues to increase, identification of a greater number of potential drug targets has occurred.

Neuropathic pain: market set to double over next decade
Lucrative opportunities exist in the expanding neuropathic pain market, with the value of the market set to more than double from $3.6 billion in 2006 to over $7 billion in 2016. However, pipeline drugs in late-stage development (Phase II upwards) are only forecast to take 18% of this market in 2016. A major breakthrough in pain control coupled with a strong marketing strategy is required to compete with the current market leaders, Eli Lilly and Pfizer.
